A magical story-telling adventure with the ‘national children’s dramatist’ David Wood OBE. Stories, magic and audience participation are part of this fantastic show that is perfect for primary school children of all ages. David’s plays include The BFG, The Meg and Mog Show, The Witches, The Twits, Tom’s Midnight Garden, The Owl and the Pussycat went to see... and countless books written especially for children. As well as performing, David will be staying around to sign copies of his books that will be on sale in the Swan Theatre foyer.
Shakespeare’s Fighting Talk - Stage Combat Workshop

As well as being the lord of love poetry,
Shakespeare was also the prince of the put-down!
Some of his insults were pretty foul and rude and
often ended up with a fight of some description.
Join actor and director Ben Humphrey on the
main stage of the Swan Theatre for an intensive
stage combat workshop using some of
Shakespeare’s rudest (and funniest) insults.
Please wear suitable trainers and tracksuit bottoms
that allow freedom of movement. Please bring
own refreshments. Suitable for ages 13-18.
Petr Horacek - Behind the Books

International, award-winning author Petr Horacek leads a workshop for young people focusing on the process of going from being a budding author right through to being a published one. Aimed at young people aged 15-18 the workshop is ideal for any young people who are interested in the writing industry and all that it entails. A brilliant opportunity to pick the brains of a real live author.
A Taste of Dahl

This play, aimed at children and adults alike is an
autobiographical adventure presented by the
actor who created the role of the BFG on stage -
Anthony Pedley (The RSC, A Fish Called Wanda,
Fierce Creatures). He show’s how Roald Dahl’s
early life may have influenced his writing, how
he created his classic books and where his ideas
may have come from... all in his own words!
Designed to encourage children to enjoy reading
on a whole new level this show is a delight for
kids and adults of all ages. A question and answer
session is also included.
Does your imagination run wild? Do you stir up stories every time you look out the window?
If so, we want you to write a short story, pen some poetry or draw a scene
from your favourite book for the Worcester Children’s Book Festival.
Everyone who enters will be with a chance to win prizes and see their work published in a book as well as in the Worcester News. All short listed entrants will be invited to an awards ceremony on Sunday, August 29 at the Swan Theatre with our special guest prize-presenter, actor Anthony Pedley (Taste of Dahl). There are three categories to choose from:
SHORT STORY
This category is split into three age groups;6-9 years, 10-13, 14+.
Let your
imagination run wild and reek havoc and
write us a short story set in Worcester.
Your story can be about anyone and
anything, as long as it is set in the
Faithful city. Be as creative as you want– just keep your tale under 800 words long.
*There will be a winner from each age group.
POETRY
This category is split into three age groups;
6-9 years, 10-13, 14+.
If you know your
stanzas from your sonnets how about
writing a poem? This time your poem
can be about anyone and anything, as
long as it is connected to Worcestershire,
whether it is an Ode to the Malvern Hills
to or ditty dedicated to Worcester sauce.
*There will be a winner from each age group.
ILLUSTRATION
This category is split into three age groups;
6-9 years, 10-13, 14+.
This category
is for those who love to doodle.
Draw a scene from your favourite book –
it could be Roald Dahl's Matilda reading
in the library or Harry Potter battling
Voldemort.
The more original the better!
*There will be a winner from each age group.
As well as winners from each age group in all three categories there will be a special prize for the overall winner– the one person who has the most creativity and oodles of originality.
Prizes include: BOOK TOKENS, TROPHIES, PUBLICATION IN THE FESTIVAL BOOK
and many, many more..
